The Safari Suit

safari jacket is a garment originally designed for the purpose of going on safari in the African bush. When paired with trousers or shorts, it becomes a safari suit.

The safari suit was popularised with Australian fashion in the 1970s,  with former South Australian Premier Don Dunstan commonly wearing it.

Charles, Prince of Wales famously wore a safari suit on his visit to Uluru with Diana, Princess of Wales in 1983.

The safari suit in India gained prominence when local synthetic fibre manufacture and there was a significant increased in the latter half of the 1970s.

The increase is why many synthetic versions of the safari suit can be found in thrift and vintage stores worldwide.

I like wearing mine, as a suit or as separates in spring/summer. Underneath, typically I would wear a t-shirt or henley for short sleeves or a shirt with a long-sleeve version.

Open neck with a neckerchief or without is preference as I think a tie looks a little too school boy rather than preppy.

What are your thoughts on the Safari Suit and would you wear one?
